Changes afoot...
iNik.net just got upgraded to Drupal 6. While it was a fairly clean upgrade, in order to take full advantage of it, I kind of pulled it apart and am in the process of putting it back together. It’s likely that some stuff simply won’t work right. If you find bugs, contact me and I’ll get on ‘em.
RIP: Gary Gygax
Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons & Dragons, died on March 4th. I cannot begin to estimate how many hours (and dollars!) I’ve spent playing, studying up on, imagining, and otherwise enjoying his games and those that came after.
I'd like to thank the Academy...
My iMovie ‘08 Library Compressor just got mentioned by Dan Frakes in MacWorld’s “Mac Gems” column. Very cool. I’m glad it’s been such a popular script. I make all these things for myself, but it’s awesome that so many other folks find them useful.
The awesomeness of this post cannot be underrated
An amazing script that takes the hassles out of managing contents of your site. This script fetches contents from rss feeds specified by you and then generates html pages out of it. RSS feeds ensure that the contents on your site is fresh and continuosly updated. This super script needs just one time configuration and then it runs on its own.
This script uses templates to render the html hence it can be made to fit any page layout and design.
Help raise awareness of how great Mac software is!
A while ago, I set up a Squidoo lens to let folks vote on which software for the Mac was best. To my great surprise, it was really popular, and quickly shot up into the top 50 Squidoo lenses, and was nominated as a Lens of the Day by Squidoo.
Well, it’s popularity has diminished slightly, but now the lens is in the running for the Squidoo Lens of the Year!
How cool would it be if a lens promoting the very BEST stuff for the Mac was awarded this prestigious title?
Scribd: YouTube for eBooks
I just learned about Scribd - Home, a new service that serves up user-generated eBooks and other text-filled content. You can read the shared documents online, or download them in Word, Text, PDF or even MP3 (using pretty decent text-to-speech software).
The bar to self publish just became quite low indeed.
Just upgraded to Drupal 5.1
I just upgraded the site to Drupal 5.1.
The upgrade appears to have gone smoothly (this site’s theme notwithstanding — working on that), but there may still be bumps in the road. Please let me know if you find anything out of order.
A Disappointing MacWorld Keynote
Ahh, MacWorld Keynote Day! It’s like a second X-Mas, except at this one Santa sends me an invoice for all the toys he left under the tree. Bittersweet, to be sure, but a wonderful and exciting time to see the latest in Mac Goodness.
Except this year, I didn’t.
Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone looks fantastic (I was literally quivering with delight as I read Engadget’s play-by-play coverage), and the Apple TV, while not my cup of tea, also looks like a very slick product.
But come on, the whole keynote was spent talking about a product that we already knew existed (and pretty much what it would do — HD and iTunes support was a given, all that was left was a bit of confusion over the connection with the Mac and its support for other formats, as well as the nitty gritty of how it looks/acts), and a product that won’t ship until June.
Elementary, my dear Watson
For quite some time, my 12” Powerbook G4 has been crashing (kernel panic) erratically. I finally narrowed down that when the left front part of the case (across from the battery) flexed (like when I picked it up on that corner), it crapped out!
After discussing this with some techs online and off, I came to the conclusion that the most likely problem was a miniscule crack in the motherboard or in some of the traces on the mobo. When the board flexed, the traces no longer made a connection, and the computer crapped out. Made sense, it fit the symptoms, and mobo damage from flexing has been known to happen with various laptops that don’t have totally firm cases. (i.e. All plastic, aluminum and titanium ones.)
kGTD Development In Light of OmniFocus
It’s taken me a few days to consider what, if any, reaction was warranted by the recent announcement of OmniFocus. Given that I am hopelessly addicted to all the software Omni makes (although I don’t own all of it, I would buy it if I didn’t have a family to feed), I assume I will be migrating to OmniFocus when it ships or enters public beta.
However, I am currently stuck wholly in Kinkless GTD, and I expect to keep working there as well.
So the question comes down to whether I intend to continue to improve/support the many scripts I’ve built to enhance Kinkless GTD.
Problems with Mail to KGTD
A number of users have reported that when their mail rules activate Mail to KGTD, they get an error type 8. I’ve tracked down the CAUSE of this problem, but I’m not quite at a solution yet.
The cause is that when messages come in, they don’t seem to have message IDs anymore. Since my script requests a message ID, everything borks when it tries to get it. Once messages are properly received (after rules are run), they have IDs (like they should), which is why Mail Act-On continues to work, as will the rule if you edit it and then request that the new rule run on all messages in your inbox.
